Reducing our footprint

Our ‘Growing for Good’ mission is to be ‘in harmony with people and nature’. For us, this means going beyond providing great drinks – it means listening to consumers, taking care of our employees and working to minimise our carbon footprint. 

As a business we have the ability to drive change.  We’re committed to reducing the impact we have on the environment and encouraging our consumers to do the same.

We only have one planet and want to nurture it for future generations. For this reason, we’re proud signatories of the UK Plastics Pact, a bold and unique initiative that will transform the UK’s plastic system. By bringing together the entire plastics value chain behind a common set of ambitious targets, it will move us towards a system which keeps plastic in the economy and out of the environment. It will encompass innovation, research and new business models to rethink and redesign what packaging we put on the market in the first place, and how we can encourage more re-use of packaging.

The UK Plastics Pact, led by WRAP, is the first of a global network of such pacts, enabled by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy initiative.

We’re continuing to look at new and innovative ways to minimise the impact of our packaging and supply chain operations on the environment. All of our drinks containers are recyclable; our Ribena bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic (and have been since 2007) and over the last four years we have removed more than 2,600 tonnes of plastic packaging from our production process.

Like our parent company, Suntory, we’ve set ourselves ambitious targets and undertaken various initiatives to ensure our environment is fit for the future.  This forms part of Suntory’s Environmental Vision for 2050, which focuses on regenerating the natural environment and reducing our carbon footprint across the globe. The Pact is a signal of our commitment to do more and we'll continue to update on our progress.

Here’s a flavour of what else we’re doing to reach these targets:

  • We’ve consolidated our distribution centres and estimate an annual saving of 1.09 million transportation miles a year and 1.56m KG of CO2.
  • Our factory has already met the highest international standards of environmental management (ISO 14001) and our goal by 2030 is to have reduced our CO2 emissions by 25% and water consumption by 15%.
  • We’ve installed two boreholes at our Coleford site meaning 50% of the water we use is sourced directly from our land rather than the town, reducing water wastage and minimising our impact on local resources.
  • Waste heat from our Combined Heat and Power Plant is captured and re-used to create steam for our production process. This provides 76%* of our power on-site.
  • We’ve reduced the plastic used in our supply chain by 2,606 tonnes in the last four years and we’re still reducing.
  • We’ve partnered with FWAG (Farming & Wildlife Advisory Group) to ensure each of our growers have a resilient biodiversity plan.
  • We’ve been 'zero waste to landfill' since 2008.
